In den Beiträgen der Methodologie artikuliert sich das wissenschaftliche Selbstverständnis des Projekts. Die Auffassung zugrunde liegender Begriffe der Linguistik und der Informationstechnologie wird dargelegt, die Funktionsbereiche des Portals, besser: der virtuellen Forschungsumgebung, werden bestimmt und markante Punkte des außersprachlichen Kontexts werden kommentiert.  Diese Unterfütterung der Nutzeroberfläche mit analytischem Diskurs zielt auf maximale Transparenz der gesamten Unternehmung; mit dieser Konzeption unterscheidet sich VerbaAlpina von den meisten anderen Projekten im Feld der Digital Humanities. Denn die entwickelten Prozeduren der virtuellen Geolinguistik zeigen sich nicht nur in der Funktionalität des Webauftritts, sie werden auch explizit und unmittelbar in der aktuellen Forschung verortet, ohne den mittelbaren Umweg über andere Kanäle der Publikation zu nehmen (die im übrigen in Gestalt externer Publikationen auch genutzt werden).

Um welche Daten handelt es sich? Wer war an der Datenerstellung beteiligt?

In erster Linie handelt es sich um Sprachdaten aus den im Alpenraum gesprochenen Nationalsprachen und deren Dialekten. Der Großteil der Daten stammt aus den für diesen Raum verfügbaren traditionellen Sprachatlanten und Wörterbüchern mit georeferenzierten Belegen aus drei verschiedenen Konzeptdomänen: Almwirtschaft, Natur und moderne Lebenswelt. Dieses historische Material wird über ein Crowdsourcing-Tool um aktuellen Dialektwortschatz ergänzt. Durch diese online gesammelten Daten erhält das Projekt auch eine diachrone Perspektive, die die Beobachtung von Sprachwandel z.B. vor dem Hintergrund wirtschaftlicher und/oder demographischer Veränderungen erlaubt. Um dies zu ermöglichen, sammelt VerbaAlpina auch die Sprachdaten ergänzende Daten, etwa zu Siedlungen, Inschriften und Toponymen.

Über welche Wege wurden die Daten zugänglich gemacht? Wie wurden die FAIR-Kriterien umgesetzt?

VerbaAlpina ist bemüht, alle datenbezogenen Verfahren an den FAIR-Kriterien auszurichten. Der Auffindbarkeit der Daten dient u. a. die Kooperation mit der Universitätsbibliothek (UB) der LMU im Rahmen des Projekts „e-humanities – interdisziplinär“. Im Zuge dessen wird der Datenbestand von VerbaAlpina mit Metadaten im Datacite-Format versehen und im Open Data Repositorium der UB abgelegt. Dies ermöglicht das gezielte Auffinden der einzelnen Datensätze über den Bibliothekskatalog der UB (Discover). Die Daten von VerbaAlpina werden über die API-Schnittstelle, die interaktive Karte sowie das Lexicon Alpinum zugänglich gemacht. Alle Projektdaten werden zudem unter eine Open Access konforme Creative Commons-Lizenz gestellt. Die Verknüpfung mit Normdaten dient sowohl der Auffindbarkeit als auch der Interoperabilität der Daten. Neben der Verknüpfung der Kernentitäten des Projekts (morpho-lexikalische Typen, Konzepte und Gemeinden) mit projektspezifischen Normdaten, werden zur Verknüpfung dieser mit externen Datensätzen zusätzlich Identifikatoren externer Institutionen integriert: Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND), Q-/L-IDs von Wikidata, Geonames, Sprachcodes nach ISO 639-3 und diverse Referenzwörterbücher. Zum direkten Verweis auf einzelne Objekte wird jedes Datenobjekt zudem mit eigener URL versehen und erhält im Discover-Dienst der UB einen persistenten Identifikator (auch DOI).

Wie hat die Veröffentlichung Ihrer Forschungsdaten zu einer Innovation außerhalb des akademischen Betriebs geführt?

Die grundlegende Innovation besteht in der Einbindung nicht akademischer Informanten und interessierter Nutzer in die Forschungskommunikation. Auf der Basis konsequent webbasierter Arbeit sind alle Forschungsdaten standortunabhängig veränderbar und konsumierbar. Das bedeutet eine radikale Demokratisierung, denn die Ergebnisse sprachwissenschaftlicher Forschung werden den Sprechern selbst wieder zur Verfügung gestellt. Zur praktischen Umsetzung dieses Ziels wurden vollkommen neue, attraktive Visualisierungs- und Präsentationsweisen konzipiert und realisiert (Interaktive Karte, Lexicon Alpinum). Diese Öffnung der akademischen Forschung für Jedermann wird durch kontinuierliche Öffentlichkeitsarbeit in traditionellen Medien und social media unterstützt (Dokumentation).

Welchen Mehrwert zieht die Gesellschaft aus der Nachnutzung Ihrer Forschungsdaten?

Die Forschungsdaten zeigen die historisch enge Verschränkung der französischen, schweizerischen, italienischen, deutschen und slowenischen Dialekträume seit (vor)römischer Zeit. Im spezifisch alpinen Vokabular und der bezeichneten Sachkultur sind sich alle Dialekte dieses Raums substantiell viel ähnlicher, als die vollkommen verschiedenen Hochsprachen erwarten lassen. So wird eine gemeinsame transnationale Identität der Regionen offensichtlich und die nationale Komponente der regionalen Identität in selbstverständlicher Weise relativiert.

Welches Projekt soll durch die Fördermittel angestoßen werden? Welche Institution ist Mittelempfänger (Hochschule, Forschungsinstitution)?

Die Fördermittel sollen darauf verwendet werden, die Konzeption und Umsetzung einer Kampagne zur Stärkung des Selbstbewusstseins der Dialektsprecher:innen hinsichtlich der Verwendung ihrer Dialekte anstatt hochsprachlicher Begriffe anzustoßen. Dabei soll besonders die Modernitätsfähigkeit von Dialekten hervorgehoben sowie deren lexikalische und mediale Präsenz gefördert werden. Mittelempfänger ist das an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München angesiedelte Forschungsprojekt VerbaAlpina.

Der entscheidende Unterschied ist dabei das "LEFT", das dafür sorgt, dass auch Tokens ohne Konzeptzuordnung gezählt werden. Das sind aber alle Tokens, was ich nicht unbedingt mit "Belege" gleichsetzen würde, weil nicht tokensierte Belege fehlen und aufgespaltene Mehtwortlexien mehrfach gezählt werden. Ich würde vielleicht eher über die Äußerungen gehen und über Eintragungen im CS-Tool sprechen. Oder man nimmt diese Abfrage, die Einzelwortbelege und Mehrwortlexien zählt, aber Bestandteile von längeren Äußerungen ignoriert:

Das wäre für mich am ehesten die Zahl der (verarbeiteten, d.h. tokenisierten) Belege.
Mir ist dabei zufällig noch ein Problem aufgefallen: Bei allen CS-Belegen, sollte jeder Beleg genau einem Konzept zugeordnet sein. Das ist aber nicht immer so. Bei Token 174879 (Oim) sind z.B. ALM und ALMHÜTTE zugeordnet, obwohl die Äußerunng sich nur auf ALMHÜTTE bezieht. Genauso auch bei 864838 (Acqua) mit WASSER und TRINKWASSER, obwohl im CS-Tool TRINKWASSER verwendet wurde. Kann es sein, dass da im Typisierungstool aus Versehen zusätzliche Konzepte zugeordnet wurden? Die vollständige Liste kann mit

So oder so würde ich aber den JOIN mit dialects weglassen, weil so die Belege ignoriert werden, die älter sind und denen noch kein Dialekt zugeordnet wurde. Auch hier sind das natürlich nur die Tokens. Am sinnvollsten wäre es wohl auch die nicht typisierten Tokengruppen zu addieren, dann hat man alles, was noch typisiert werden muss:

Area under investigation

Where our data come from …

Mainly three different sources:

  • printed atlases/dictionaries (condition: georeferenced; example atlas: AIS)
  • digital material from project partners
  • crowdsourcing (particularly important for current project phase)

The Alpine region and the tradition of ethnolinguistics (Thomas Krefeld)

  • The Alpine region represents a cultural area of great historical depth (with evidence since the Bronze Age; cf. Reitmaier 2021, Mandl 2014).
  • Cultural areas are defined by a network of skills ('Kulturtechniken') that have developed against the background of natural conditions.
  • Among these skills are languages, especially dialects; they are of particular importance from the perspective of the humanities because they provide a privileged insight into the historical depth of the cultural networks to which they themselves belong.
  • When geolinguistics examines linguistic variation in the context of other cultural skills, it may be called ethnolinguistics (cf. also Krefeld 2021).

Prototypical example: Alpine dairying

  • Natural conditions of Alpine cultural areas: woodland up to a certain altitude (tree line), grassland with scree slopes and rock above
  • Appropriate cultural skills for subsistence: animal keeping and dairying
  • Current dialectal variation in dairy terminology reflects all known historical phases (or: strata) and thus guarantees their cultural memory.

2. VerbaAlpina: Studiare la complessità alpina

Studio del lessico dialettale delle tre famiglie linguistiche della regione alpina: romanza, germanica, slava (Romania alpina, Germania alpina, Slavia alpina). (Mappa interattiva)

2.1 Area di studio: la regione alpina

Area di ricerca di VerbaAlpina

  • Limitazione dell'area di studio: Perimetro della Convenzione delle Alpi
  • Convenzione delle Alpi: accordo internazionale (1995) tra gli 8 paesi alpini e l'UE per lo sviluppo sostenibile e la protezione delle Alpi
  • Superficie di 190.600 km2
  • include parti di 6 paesi diversi (D, A, CH, I, F, SLO) e 2 paesi completi (FL, MC)

2.2. Generalità dell'area alpina

  • 3 famiglie linguistiche rappresentate da continua dialettali
  • Gradi di frammentazione dialettale:
    • Romanza: molto frammentata
    • Germanica: abbastanza frammentata
    • Slava: poco frammentata
  • Le zone di distribuzione delle 3 famiglie linguistiche non possono essere limitate a stati specifici
  • Romanzo: varietà del continuum assegnabili a diverse lingue (francese, italiano, occitano, francoprovenzale, romancio, ladino e friulano)
  • Germanico: varietà alemanne e bavaresi, con alcune isole linguistiche walser e bavaresi antiche (cimbri) sul lato meridionale
  • Slavo: dialetti sloveni, usati anche nelle comunità italiane e austriache

I dialetti alpini sono:

  • storicamente primari, cioè originati nelle zone in cui sono parlati, solo successivamente sono stati coperti da lingue storicamente secondarie (poi standard)
  • usati localmente e all'orale

Lingue standard:

  • Uso a livello regionale / statale
  • Campo della scrittura, nei mass media
  • alfabetizzazione, comunicazione dei cittadini con l'amministrazione, produzione di testi letterari, ecc.
  • italiano, francese, tedesco, sloveno

Inoltre, presenza di lingue minori:

  • occitano
  • francoprovenzale/arpitano
  • romancio
  • ladino
  • friulano

  • due livelli in scambio osmotico: i dialetti assorbono elementi dalle lingue standard e viceversa
  • i parlanti di alcune zone alpine parlano non solo una, ma due o tre lingue standard (e altrettanti dialetti)

2.3. Obiettivi di VerbaAlpina

  1. documentare aree di parole che spesso attraversano i confini di una delle tre famiglie linguistiche (geolinguistica interlinguistica)
  2. identificare le caratteristiche (soprattutto lessicali) comuni al di là dei confini individuali dei dialetti e delle lingue
  3. evidenziare i punti etnolinguistici in comune e le divergenze
  4. Superare la tradizionale limitazione degli stati-nazione

  • ampia omogeneità etnografica e topografica (somiglianze geologiche, limitazione a singole forme economiche tradizionali)
  • forte eterogeneità linguistica (3 famiglie linguistiche, diverse lingue, grande diversità di dialetti)
  • zona di confine di diversi stati
  • rete relativamente densa di atlanti linguistici e dizionari

3.1.1. Tipologia delle fonti

Gli atlanti linguistici utilizzati da VA come fonti di dati sono caratterizzati dalle seguenti caratteristiche:

  1. I dati ivi contenuti sono georeferenziabili: i comuni sono considerati come l'unità più piccola di riferimento
  2. Diverse famiglie linguistiche: romanza, germanica, slava
  3. Diverse tradizioni di ricerca (romanistica, germanistica, slavistica)

  • Importanza della documentazione
  • Creazione di relazioni spaziali tra le fonti è lasciata al lettore

4. Diverse focus di interesse

  • BSA (Bayerischer Sprachatlas) / ALD-I e ALD-II (Atlant linguistich dl ladin dolomitich y di dialec vejins; Atlante linguistico del ladino dolomitico e dei dialetti adiacenti) non contengono nessuna mappa (o pochissime) relative a concetti fondamentali come CASARO, MUNGERE, CAGLIO, PASTORE ecc.
  • L'AIS (Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz), invece, contiene molte carte su concetti etnografici e anche disegni di oggetti tipici alpini come la cartina1206, la zangola.

3.2. Crowdsourcing

Definizione:

"Crowdsourcing ist eine interaktive Form der Leistungserbringung, die kollaborativ oder wettbewerbsorientiert organisiert ist und eine große Anzahl extrinsisch oder intrinsisch motivierter Akteure unterschiedlichen Wissensstands unter Verwendung moderner IuK-Systeme auf Basis des Web 2.0 einbezieht." (Traduzione italiana: Il crowdsourcing è una forma interattiva di fornitura di servizi organizzata in modo collaborativo o competitivo che coinvolge un gran numero di attori motivati estrinsecamente o intrinsecamente di diversi livelli di conoscenza che utilizzano i moderni sistemi informatici basati sul Web 2.0) Martin/Lessmann/Voß 2008

  • Crowdsourcing di VerbaAlpina: i parlanti di un dialetto alpino vengono contattati direttamente e chiamati a fornire parole dialettali
  • Parallelamente alle fonti di dati stampati o digitali (vedi sopra), VerbaAlpina raccoglie nuovi dati provenienti dai parlanti di un dialetto alpino attraverso lo strumento di crowdsourcing

  1. bilanciare le incoerenze tra le fonti già disponibili
  2. eliminare le lacune o le imprecisioni
  3. marcare termini obsoleti come tali

4. Elaborazione dei dati

Problema: acquisizione di dati specificamente da atlanti linguistici

Sistemi di trascrizione usati negli atlanti linguistici (per esempio AIS: Böhmer-Ascoli) non sono sempre codificati in Unicode (quindi non è sempre possibile rilevare con OCR)

Soluzione:

4.1. Trascrizione

  • Prima fase dell'omogeneizzazione dei dati
  • VerbaAlpina utilizza il BetaCode (sistema di trascrizione elaborato dal Thesaurus Linguae Graecae).
  • Regole di trascrizione: ad ogni carattere specifico di ogni atlante corrisponde uno o più caratteri ASCII

  • La forma di un tipo morfo-lessicale è rappresentata dai lemmi dei dizionari di riferimento:
    • Gruppo germanico/slavo: solo una lingua standardizzata (tedesco e sloveno)
    • Gruppo romanzo: tutti i tipi morfo-lessicale sono rappresentati dalle forme standard francesi e italiane, se disponibili (beurre/burro; lait/latte ecc.); altrimenti, si prende solo una delle due forme (italiano O francese), come nel caso di ricotta; se non esiste una variante del tipo in nessuna delle due lingue romanze di riferimento, si usa la voce di un dizionario dialettale (BLad, LSI ecc.);
    • Nel caso non siano disponibili voci adatte nei dizionari di riferimento, VerbaAlpina propone un tipo morfo-lessicale proprio.

<description descriptionType="Abstract">Das Projekt erschließt den einzelsprachlich und dialektal stark fragmentierten Alpenraum in seiner kultur- und sprachgeschichtlichen Zusammengehörigkeit selektiv und analytisch und überwindet dadurch die traditionelle Beschränkung auf im wesentlichen aktuelle politische Einheiten (Nationalstaaten). Die ausgewählten Sachgebiete betreffen die Natur, die Kulturgeschichte und die kulturelle Gegenwart. Dazu wird unter Verwendung zeitgemäßer Medientechnologie (Datenbank, Georeferenzierung, Internet, social software) eine umfassende, einzelsprachübergreifende Forschungsumgebung mit mehreren Funktionsbereichen aufgebaut: Sie dient der Dokumentation (interaktive georeferenzierte Kartographie), der Datenerhebung (durch social software), der Publikation und ihrer eigenen kollaborativen Weiterentwicklung; damit wird ein Modell für die Überführung der Geolinguistik in die digital humanities entwickelt. Die leitende Absicht besteht darin, bereits vorliegende (und teils schlecht zugängliche) Sprachatlas- und Wörterbuchdaten in vervollständigter, gebündelter, mehrdimensional aufbereiteter und sprachgeschichtlich analysierter Form zugänglich zu machen. Durch die Vervollständigung (Neuerhebung mit Hilfe von social software) werden der ungleichmäßige Belegraster der Datenaltbestände ausgeglichen und ihre semantischen und onomasiologischen Inkonsistenzen überwunden. So integriert das Projekt die beiden dominanten, methodologisch alternativen Ansätze der digitalen Geolinguistik, nämlich die an der sprachgeographischen Tradition orientierte Dokumentation einerseits (vgl. ALD-I, ALD-II) und die Neuerhebung durch Crowdsourcing andererseits (vgl. AdA, ALIQUOT) in einem umfassenden Rahmen. VerbaAlpina wird durch zahlreiche Kooperationspartner unterstützt. Das Projekt wendet sich in erster Linie an die wissenschaftliche Öffentlichkeit; entsprechend fachlich sind die erklärenden Texte unter dem Reiter METHODOLOGIE angelegt. Vor allem die zentrale Funktion unter dem Reiter INTERAKTIVE KARTE ist jedoch für jedermann leicht zugänglich. Interessierten Laien wird daher empfohlen, sich zunächst mit diesem Angebot vertraut zu machen: Die Suchfilter sollten sich trotz der vielleicht ungewohnten Terminologie beim Ausprobieren weitgehend selbst erklären.</description>
